Carjackers strike again, cops foil attempt
In a glaring security lapse, carjackers have not struck once but thrice at the Ferozepur road in the past 12 days.
On Wednesday, a car was stolen yet again on gunpoint from a textile design student in front of Ansal Plaza on Ferozepur road. The miscreants drove to the scene of crime in a stolen i20 car and drove off with their latest booty, a Verna car.
Chirag Oswal (19) of Gurdyal Singh road had parked his Verna car near Ansal Plaza. As he was about to drive away in the car at around 9.15pm, an i20 car stopped him. Two men alighted, pointed a gun at him and asked him to step out of his car.
The miscreants also snatched his purse, mobile phone and other belongings before fleeing.
While two miscreants drove away in his car, one drove the i20.
The victim immediately alerted his mother, who informed the police party present on the naka at Sat Pal Mittal road.
Taking the incident as a challenge, the police worked swiftly. Ludhiana police flashed a message and alerted the Khanna, Fatehgarh Sahib, Ropar and Mohali district police and asked them to set up nakas to trap the carjackers.
After five hours of manhunt, the police nabbed the two accused, while one managed to escape.

The mobile phone, identity card, Rs 3,500 and other belongings of the victim have also been recovered.
The i20 used in crime was also carjacked on gunpoint at Ferozepur road from one Rishu Kwatra of Ludhiana around 12 days ago. The accused arrested have been identified as Gurdev Singh alias Debu of village Ghahoti of Moga and Gurvinder Singh of Ajit Nagar of Moga. Their accomplice, Gagandeep Singh of Sidhwan Bet area, managed to flee.
It is third such incident of carjacking in the last 12 days at Ferozepur road.
The police had arrested two members of another carjacking gang on Saturday.
Addressing a press conference on Thursday, deputy commissioner of police ( DCP), Ishwar Singh informed that the police alerted all the police parties and initiated an operation soon after they were informed about the crime. The police pressed into service station house officer (SHO) Koomkalan, SHO Samrala and SHO Khamano for the operation.
The carjackers had deserted the Verna car near Khamano and fled. They had reached ' Mitran Da Dhaba' near Khamano when the police traced them. To evade arrest, the miscreants made a run for it towards the fields; police gave them a chase and nabbed the two accused at around 2.30 am.
“The accused are drug peddlers and used to smuggle narcotics. They themselves are addicts and committed crimes to meet their monetary needs,” said the DCP.
“Around five criminal cases have been registered against the accused in the past. The gang has no connection with the carjacking gang the police had busted on Saturday. The accused are being interrogated,” he added.
