Widow gangraped; police fight over jurisdiction
No case registered even as victim admitted in hospital after four men allegedly sexually assaulted her
Four men allegedly gangraped a widow of an exserviceman after drugging her and threw her in a vacant plot after the crime. Even as police were fighting over the police station in whose jurisdiction the crime took place on Monday, the 38-year-old victim was admitted in civil hospital for treatment.
No FIR had been registered till Tuesday evening.
The women hailing from Sangrur had visited Ludhiana to pursue a pension case of her husband, who was employed as a guard in Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited after retirement from army. He had died two years ago.
The woman claimed that after submitting pension form at the BSNL office, she went to Bharat Nagar Chowk to catch a bus for her native town.
She said that her three distant relatives along with an unidentified accomplice arrived there in a car and offered her a glass of juice.
She claimed that she fell unconscious after drinking the juice suspected to be laced with sedative. The accused abducted her in the car and took her to a room where she was allegedly gangraped. Later, they threw her at a vacant plot on Tajpur road near Ludhiana central jail and fled.
According to sub-inspector Kamaljeet Singh, additional SHO of Division Number 7 police station, said that some passer-by informed 108 ambulance service after the woman was found lying unconscious. The ambulance staff rushed her to hospital and informed police.
Singh said that the woman had accused her distant relatives Rajinder, Pyara, Kamal Sharma and one unidentified accused for the crime. “As the woman was kidnapped from Bharat Nagar Chowk area, the spot comes under division number 5 police station. We have asked them to register the case,” said the SI.
“We have not received any information about the crime as yet. We will take action after reviewing the whole matter,” said inspector Nirmal Singh, SHO of Division Number 5 police station.
