Widow gan­graped; po­lice fight over ju­ris­dic­tion

No case reg­is­tered even as vic­tim ad­mit­ted in hospi­tal af­ter four men al­legedly sex­u­ally as­saulted her

Four men al­legedly gan­graped a widow of an exser­vice­man af­ter drug­ging her and threw her in a va­cant plot af­ter the crime. Even as po­lice were fight­ing over the po­lice sta­tion in whose ju­ris­dic­tion the crime took place on Mon­day, the 38-year-old vic­tim was ad­mit­ted in civil hospi­tal for treat­ment.

No FIR had been reg­is­tered till Tues­day evening.

The women hail­ing from Sangrur had vis­ited Lud­hi­ana to pur­sue a pen­sion case of her hus­band, who was em­ployed as a guard in Bharat San­char Nigam Lim­ited af­ter re­tire­ment from army. He had died two years ago.

The woman claimed that af­ter sub­mit­ting pen­sion form at the BSNL of­fice, she went to Bharat Na­gar Chowk to catch a bus for her na­tive town.

She said that her three dis­tant rel­a­tives along with an uniden­ti­fied ac­com­plice ar­rived there in a car and of­fered her a glass of juice.

She claimed that she fell un­con­scious af­ter drink­ing the juice sus­pected to be laced with seda­tive. The ac­cused ab­ducted her in the car and took her to a room where she was al­legedly gan­graped. Later, they threw her at a va­cant plot on Ta­jpur road near Lud­hi­ana cen­tral jail and fled.

Ac­cord­ing to sub-in­spec­tor Ka­mal­jeet Singh, ad­di­tional SHO of Di­vi­sion Num­ber 7 po­lice sta­tion, said that some passer-by in­formed 108 am­bu­lance ser­vice af­ter the woman was found ly­ing un­con­scious. The am­bu­lance staff rushed her to hospi­tal and in­formed po­lice.

Singh said that the woman had ac­cused her dis­tant rel­a­tives Ra­jin­der, Pyara, Ka­mal Sharma and one uniden­ti­fied ac­cused for the crime. “As the woman was kid­napped from Bharat Na­gar Chowk area, the spot comes un­der di­vi­sion num­ber 5 po­lice sta­tion. We have asked them to reg­is­ter the case,” said the SI.

“We have not re­ceived any in­for­ma­tion about the crime as yet. We will take ac­tion af­ter re­view­ing the whole mat­ter,” said in­spec­tor Nir­mal Singh, SHO of Di­vi­sion Num­ber 5 po­lice sta­tion.
