HT Ludhiana Live - - In&around - Tarsem Singh Deogan tarsem.deogan@hindustan LUDHIANA:

Police suspect that three persons arrested for motor theft on March 13 and 15 may have robbed the vehicles and not just stolen them.

A police official on Saturday said that the accused had during interrogation claimed that they had used a master key to steal the vehicles. “But we also suspect that they may have robbed some of the cars to avoid being charged with robbery, which carries a harsher punishment than motor theft,” said Daresi police station house officer Sanjiv Kapoor on Saturday.

Daresi police had busted a gang of alleged car thieves by arresting one of the accused, Shahbaz Singh of Dashmesh Nagar, on March 13. On a tipoff by him, two more persons, Ashok Kumar of Peeru Banda of Salem Tabri area and Jaswinder Singh of Labor Colony of Gill Chowk, were arrested on March 15. Police have recovered 12 cars so far. “Though the accused claimed that they used a master key, most of the recovered cars have security measures, including a special ignition function that cannot be used with a master key,” Kapoor said.

Police are yet to contact the owners of cars as their registration has been traced to other states. “We are in touch with our counterparts in other states,” he said. One of the accused, Bablu, is at large.
