N. Natara­jan, Founder Chair­man of Ko­vai Pazhamudir Nilayam’s story has been one of rags to riches, a truly in­spir­ing tale. He sin­gle-hand­edly cre­ated a com­pletely new model and plat­form for sell­ing fruits and veg­eta­bles in Tamil Nadu, which is now widely ac­cepted and adopted across the na­tion.

Pazhamudir Group had a very hum­ble be­gin­ning with its first out­let be­ing a mere 100 sq.ft. show­room in Coim­bat­ore. It was started by Natara­jan and his brothers. Their in­ter­est in the fruit and veg­etable busi­ness started at a very young age when they were work­ing in a small fruit shop in Coim­bat­ore. They had put lot of ef­fort in their early stages by sell­ing fruits on carts and by car­ry­ing in bas­kets be­fore they even­tu­ally started their first out­let in Coim­bat­ore. Natara­jan chose Chennai as a po­ten­tial re­tail mar­ket for fruits and veg­eta­bles and es­tab­lished the first out­let in T. Na­gar in 1999, un­der the brand name Ko­vai Pazhamudir Nilayam (KPN). Since then KPN has ex­panded to 30 branches in Chennai, four in Coim­bat­ore, five in Pondicherry, two each in Tirupur, Trichy, Than­javur and one in Cud­dalore.

He built a strong group com­pris­ing 51 re­tail shops, two tex­tile units and two restau­rants with a turnover of ₹285 crore in 2016-17).

KPN has all the fa­cil­i­ties of modern re­tail out­lets while main­tain­ing its core struc­ture of giv­ing a mar­ket-like feel for the cus­tomers in terms of quan­tity dis­played, va­ri­ety of prod­ucts spread and com­pet­i­tive pric­ing.

KPN was the first out­let to bring in weigh­ing based sys­tem against the dozen based sys­tem fol­lowed for a long time in the mar­kets. Also it abolished the bar­gain­ing sys­tem, which was very preva­lent in fruits and Veg­eta­bles trade. They have also now in­tro­duced sell­ing cut fruits and cut veg­eta­bles in hy­gienic packs, which helps cus­tomers save time in their busy sched­ules.

Group has a huge vol­ume of prod­uct move­ment ap­prox­i­mately close to

200 tones ev­ery day. They have been steadily bring­ing truck­loads of or­anges, ap­ples, pomegranates, grapes and onions from North to South ev­ery­day and im­port pro­duce di­rectly from 15 coun­tries.

Pazhamudir’s suc­cess is the re­sult of pro­vid­ing a wide range of qual­ity fruits, veg­eta­bles, juices and as­so­ci­ated prod­ucts to its cus­tomers, at rea­son­able rates around the year. KPN seek to pro­vide op­por­tu­ni­ties for growth and en­rich­ment to our em­ploy­ees, our busi­ness part­ners and the com­mu­ni­ties in which they op­er­ate.
