The busi­ness of food & gro­cery is un­der fire. Its over stored land­scape is un­der­go­ing a fun­da­men­tal re­shap­ing with large na­tional chains spark­ing up a su­per­mar­ket price war and Ama­zon ex­pand­ing into the gro­cery space. The whole food in­dus­try – from pro­duc­tion and dis­tri­bu­tion, to re­tail in­ter­faces and shop­ping ex­pe­ri­ence – is at a ma­jor turn­ing point.

Mil­len­ni­als have be­come one the largest liv­ing gen­er­a­tions. Grow­ing up in the dig­i­tal age, they are now dom­i­nat­ing on­line. For them, shop­ping for gro­ceries in a phys­i­cal store is more of a chal­lenge.

They are mov­ing away from do­ing weekly shops to a grab-and-go model, have empty fridges and are ac­tively em­brac­ing the so-called “restau­rant re­nais­sance”. In ad­di­tion, they want in­stant ev­ery­thing from ac­cess to fresh food and lo­cally sourced prod­ucts, to pack­aged meals, take-outs and on-de­mand de­liv­ery ser­vices.

The food sec­tor is wit­ness­ing a tec­tonic shift in con­sumer buy­ing habits and ex­pec­ta­tions, and gro­cery re­tail chains are do­ing their best to meet these.

The next ses­sion – ‘The Fu­ture of Food & Gro­cery Re­tail­ing: It’s All About Tech­nol­ogy’ – took a closer look on how tech­nol­ogy is driv­ing the trans­for­ma­tion in the in­dus­try and why it is im­por­tant for gro­cery re­tail­ers to pay at­ten­tion on it. It also talked about the ben­e­fits it can give to the pro­duc­ers and con­sumers. The one-hour ses­sion had Amit Sharma, Co-founder & CEO, SHOPX talk­ing about the new cat­e­gory of re­tail ‘Dig­i­tal Off­line’ in a small pre­sen­ta­tion.

Sar­a­vana C, Ap­pli­ca­tions Head, Spar and Kaushal­en­dra Singh, In-store Ex­pe­ri­ence Head, Spar spoke on the topic: ‘The Om­nichan­nel Jour­ney So Far.’ The panel dis­cus­sion fol­lowed af­ter was mod­er­ated by K Rad­hakr­ish­nan, Co-founder, Tata Re­tail - Star­quik.com, which had panelists with the likes of Anil Menon, Head
