140% cost over­run in 213 rail­way projects

More than three-fifths of a to­tal of 349 de­layed Central projects be­long to the rail­way sec­tor, caus­ing a cost over­run of Rs 1.73 lakh crore, ac­cord­ing to a re­port by the Min­istry of Statis­tics and Pro­gramme Im­ple­men­ta­tion. The min­istry mon­i­tors Central sec­tor projects in­volv­ing ex­pen­di­ture of Rs 150 crore and above each on a reg­u­lar ba­sis. Ac­cord­ing to the re­port, the orig­i­nal cost of th­ese 213 rail­way projects was Rs 1,23,103.45 crore. The to­tal an­tic­i­pated cost of the projects has bal­looned to Rs 2,96,496.70 crore now due to de­lays with cost es­ca­la­tion of 140.85 per cent.
