The upcoming international conference on minerals and metals, organised by NMDC, could be an excellent forum for sharing of knowledge.

Hotel Taj Diplomatic Enclave in New Delhi is all decked up for a big event. The grand hotel in the national capital will be hosting a two-day international conference, Minerals & Metals Outlook 2030, between October 9 and 10. The mega event is being organised by National Mineral Development Corporation (NMDC), India's largest iron ore miner, in association with the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI).

The international conference, which will be attended by the who's who of the world of minerals and metals, will be a culmination of NMDC's celebration of 60 fruitful years of operation. In fact, the 60th year celebrations of the mining company's formation were kicked off on a grand scale last December. The inaugural function of the Diamond Jubilee Year, which was organised on December 8, 2017, was graced by Vice-President M Venkaiah Naidu as chief guest and presided over by Union Minister of Steel Chaudhary Birender Singh. The inaugural function was also marked the launch of NMDC's Diamond JubiIndia lee logo, a commemorative postal stamp and booklet on NMDC's 60-year journey.

Vital deliberations

A key attraction of the international event will be the wide-ranging deliberations on mineral and metal industries. The conference will also witness a Global CEO Session and a Country Panel Discussion, with participation from top CEOs and country heads of global metal and mining companies, deliberating on the future of minerals and metals worldwide.

is well endowed with most of the minerals. It produces 95 types of minerals, including fuel, atomic, metallic and non-metallic as well as minor minerals. The country's mining sector offers tremendous potential and presents a vast opportunity for investors to mine the unexplored region. With rapid pace of urbanisation, demand for minerals and metals, especially from infrastructure and manufacturing sectors, is expected to increasing steadily.

"Minerals and metals are the drivers of growth of a country. NMDC, after six decades of journey in the mineral sector, views that a lot of space for technological innovation still ex- ists. In this context, the international conference on minerals and metals will be an excellent platform for sharing of knowledge," notes NMDC Chairman and Managing Director N Baijendra Kumar, who is also the chairman of the conference.

Besides, the outlook of global mineral and metal industries, the conference will also delve into other vital issues such as steel-making and challenges for the steel sector, development of iron ore mining, climate change and mitigation measures, technologies defining the growth of global mineral output, mineral processing and beneficiation, including byproduct recovery and waste management. The event will also focus on technical innovation, along with specific case studies, investment opportunities in mineral and metal sectors and infrastructure and logistics development, among other key issues.

Beyond iron ore

As NMDC celebrates its Diamond Jubilee Year, it is clearly palpable that the national miner still has miles to go. Beginning its operations way back in 1958, the Hyderabad-headquartered company has emerged as the country's largest iron ore miner.

The over Rs 8,800-crore company is consolidating its iron ore mining business, concentrated around Bailadila in Chhattisgarh and Donimalai in Karnataka. Moreover, it is also expanding its focus on steel, gold and diamond - NMDC operates India's only diamond mine near Panna in Madhya Pradesh - as well as other minerals, like copper, limestone and tungsten, among others.

NMDC, which closed the last financial year with a record iron ore output of 34 mt, is looking at taking the output of the vital mineral to 67 mt by 2022. As the mining company broadens its focus beyond iron ore, the upcoming international conference could provide NMDC with smart cues to dig deeper and scale greater heights.
