Turn­ing into a wo­man wasn’t enough for Malaika, 28. She is now In­dia’s first hope­ful at the in­ter­na­tional trans­gen­der beauty queen con­test, Miss In­ter­na­tional Queen 2011, to be held at Pat­taya in Thai­land. Vic­tory in a trans­gen­der con­test, Miss Sa­ho­daran, in Chen­nai back in 2007 set the stage and she staved off com­pe­ti­tion from 17 oth­ers in In­dia to be se­lected. It is the big­gest pageant for trans­gen­ders and transvestites, with rep­re­sen­ta­tives from 25 coun­tries. It took four surg­eries and nu­mer­ous treat­ments to trans­form Malaika, who is trained in cater­ing and ho­tel man­age­ment, into a dancer and a model. Will she also be the next reign­ing queen?
