Turning into a woman wasn’t enough for Malaika, 28. She is now India’s first hopeful at the international transgender beauty queen contest, Miss International Queen 2011, to be held at Pattaya in Thailand. Victory in a transgender contest, Miss Sahodaran, in Chennai back in 2007 set the stage and she staved off competition from 17 others in India to be selected. It is the biggest pageant for transgenders and transvestites, with representatives from 25 countries. It took four surgeries and numerous treatments to transform Malaika, who is trained in catering and hotel management, into a dancer and a model. Will she also be the next reigning queen?
