RONJAN SODHI, 32, Shooter
“I am currently working on a financial model to make GEC a self sustaining global NGO.”
An Arjuna Award recipient, Sodhi from Ferozepur is the only Indian marksman to have earned a top spot in the latest ISSF World Rankings. The 32-year-old scripted a new chapter in Indian shooting on 4th October, 2011 by defending his double trap gold medal at the ISSF World Cup finals in Al Ain, UAE. Sodhi was the only Indian to have qualified for the shotgun finals— a prestigious event on the International Shooting Sports Federation calendar, where the medal winners from the year's four World Cups compete.
LATEST ADDITIONS They are a gold medal won in the World Cup Finals 2010 in Turkey, and a silver in the Beijing World Cup 2011. With this, he clinched India’s first shotgun quota for the London Olympics, also bringing home a bronze from the World Cup in Maribor (Slovenia) this July. “Being number one is a nice feeling, but a temporary phase,” says Sodhi, who currently has his sights set on an Olympic medal. “Winning at the Olympics is the ultimate recognition. It would stay with me forever, unlike the constantly changing nature of rankings.”
NUMBER GAME The Ministry of Sports and Youth Affairs recently announced a grant of Rs 97 lakh for Sodhi’s Olympic training, substantial share of the total amount of Rs 6.85 crore sanctioned for 22 athletes. Contact: http://www.facebook.com/#!/pages/ronjanSodhi
