In­spired by the movie Swades, Rahul Gupta de­cided to go down a dif­fer­ent ca­reer path. Soon af­ter com­plet­ing his bach­e­lors in com­merce, Gupta joined his brother’s real es­tate com­pany, where he was ex­posed to the lives of labour­ers. “I was moved by the plight of the labour­ers’ chil­dren at con­struc­tion sites and wanted to work to­wards low­er­ing eco­nomic dis­par­ity,” he says, ex­plain­ing how Global Environment Con­cern ( Gec)—the NGO he runs in Chandi­garh was con­ceived three years ago. “The NGO works to­wards pro­vid­ing ed­u­ca­tion for poor sec­tions of so­ci­ety as well as try­ing to cre­ate a bet­ter environment by try­ing to cre­ate aware­ness about hy­giene, water har­vest­ing and plant­ing trees amongst oth­ers.

DREAM MODEL Gupta also runs an evening school called Smiles School for poor chil­dren in part­ner­ship with the Ed­u­ca­tion Depart­ment.” The school uses the premises of a Govern­ment School in Chandi­garh. “I wish to make this model pop­u­lar where govern­ment and gen­eral pub­lic can part­ner for com­mu­nity ed­u­ca­tion.”
