Amreet Nakai,

Phulkari seller

For Patiala-based collector Amreet Nakai, phulkari is not only a pleasure, but also her occupation and money making enterprise. The 39 year-old was always fascinated by this dense embroidery, but it was only in 2005 that she took it up as a profession, “I happened to gift a beautiful phulkari shawl to my niece in 2005. The piece belonged to my personal collection of 45

phulkaris. It was appreciated by many people, who started requesting me to make similar stuff for them,” recalls Nakai, who is currently supplying phulkaris to clients in the United States, Canada, United Kingdom and Pakistan (priced at Rs 15,000 and above). Amrit sources a special silk thread from Varanasi and gota from Jaipur. This phulkari collector has tie-ups with artisans in Punjab’s villages, who do this embroidery for her. She has been recently joined by her daughter Anees Nakai (far left), who helps her with fresh ideas for her phulkaris. To place your phullkari order contact 9876677888; aneesnakai_015@ya
