WHY THE WEST LEADS IN­DIA

Ma­ha­rash­tra and Gu­jarat share the top spot as the most im­proved among big states. Arunachal Pradesh tops the list in small states.

In 2010, As­sam was ranked at the bot­tom of the pile of 20 big states in the cat­e­gories of agri­cul­ture and gov­er­nance in IN­DIA TO­DAY’S State of the States re­port. In 2011, As­sam finds it­self ranked num­ber one in both cat­e­gories. Lest eye­brows be raised, it is im­por­tant to clearly state up­front that the lat­est, ninth edi­tion of the State of the States uses a rad­i­cally dif­fer­ent method­ol­ogy from the one used in the past eight edi­tions, to rank states. For the first time, our study ranks states on the ba­sis of the im­prove­ment they have recorded in the past year.
