Legacy of Hope
Arunachal Pradesh owes its success to the good work done by former chief minister Jarbom Gamlin and his predecessor, the late Dorjee Khandu. The Rs 24,000-crore economic package announced by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in December 2010 was the best New Year gift the state got in decades. The state is all set to have a 1,559-km long two-lane highway, an airport and a railway link from Assam.
Private players were wooed to harness hydro-power by investing Rs 2,94,000 crore over the next decade. Khandu revived the stateowned APEX Cooperative Bank. He also got the Food Corporation of India to open its regional head office in Itanagar. “These changed the rural economy,” says former finance minister Kalikho Pul.
