Luck by Conjuncture
11.11.11 comes once in a century. To many, it’s auspicious.
From big-fat weddings, movie releases to a three-hour musical soiree in Hyderabad, everyone is out to do something memorable on 11.11.11, the date that comes once in a century. Even Telugu Desam Party supremo N. Chandrababu Naidu is hoping the day works its magic. “Eleventh day of the eleventh month in the eleventh year, we have eleven musicians in concert and you have a date with us.” That’s his impassioned appeal to raise funds for the NTR Memorial Trust with a soiree in Hyderabad. But is it really an auspicious day? The verdict is split.
Nashik-based astrologer Atul- shastri Bhagre says it’s not auspicious. “Attractive and auspicious numerals are two different things. The date is easy to remember because of its uniqueness but it is certainly not auspicious,” he insists. Agrees Mumbai-based astrologer Prasad Mulay: “The day before November 11 is a full moon, which is not considered a good sign.” Delhibased astrologer S.P. Tata also sees nothing special in the date. “It is merely a number conjuncture,” he says.
Well-known astrologer Bejan Daruwala has a different take. “Eleven is the number of Jupiter, the Santa Claus of all planets. It gives honey as well as money,” he says. An astrologer with Rashee Studio in Delhi concurs: “Businessmen and professionals can expect a lot of progress. Afternoon onwards, the day will be even more auspicious,” he says.
Sanal Edamaruku, president of the Indian Rationalist Association, pooh-poohs all predictions. “For a marriage to be successful, compatibility is more important than the date on which you tie the knot,” he says. He rubs it in: “It’s interesting to see astrologers making predictions about a date from the Roman calendar.”
But tell that to Ravi Kocharekar, a Pune businessman, who rescheduled his wedding from November 1 to November 11. The Ranbir Kapoorstarrer Rockstar will also open in theatres on November 11. Will it be lucky for him?
