Amidst the rustle of saris and the throng of crowds is where Lavanya Nalli grew up. The grand daughter of Nalli Kuppuswami Chetty, Lavanya is the fifth generation of the Nalli family to step into the family business. However she is the only woman from the family to enter the trade. After completing her Bachelors in Computer Science, she became the President of the Nalli group of companies in 2005. The contemporary store Nalli Next was her personal contribution to the Nalli business group. “Nalli Next was a totally new initiative,” says Lavanya. “After a lot of debating and discussion with my family about whether Nalli should get into the boutique concept, we started Nalli Next. It is based on a newer format and has expanded across India.”

FORWARD THINKING She’s currently studying at Harvard University and working with Mckinsey & Company in Chicago to hone her business skills further. She intends to come back armed with education and experience to take Nalli to the next step.

“I grew up in the iconic Nalli store so it was inevitable that I fell in love with the

sarees and the trade”

LAVANYA NALLI, 26, Businesswoman
