Topping the charts
He dropped out of school to become a music director when he was barely 18. Prakash started his career as a vocalist for the cult song, Chikkubukku from the film Gentleman (1993), the music of which was scored by AR Rahman, Prakash’s maternal uncle. “I got close to Rahman-sir only in the later days of my career,” says Prakash squashing rumours about his uncle having bought him a ticket to musictown. Prakash’s musical debut in S Shankar’s 2006 Tamil film Veyyil made the industry sit up and take note. In 2008, he bagged the Rajinikanth starrer Kuselan and that catapulted him into the big league. Prakash has two Filmfare nominations to his name, both in the year 2010 for Aayirathil Oruvan and
Madrasapattinam. His most recent soundtrack, Mayakkam Enna (directed by Selvaraghavan) has garnered positive reviews from both critics and listeners alike.
BOLLYWOOD CALLING Prakash has bagged Bollywood director Shirish Kunder’s upcoming film Joker with Akshay Kumar. Anurag Kashyap has also asked Prakash to score the music for his upcoming film Gangs of Wasseypur.
