Pinched by Populism

India Today - - MAIL -

The Indian Railways is losing Rs 18 crore a day (“Railways on Track to Disaster”, November 14). Its sorry state of affairs comes after years of populism indulged in by successive ministers for whom the berth is a ticket to instant stardom in their pocket boroughs. They’ve doled out sop after sop unmindful of the hole they’ve pushed the lifeline of India’s masses into.

R. KAPOOR, Kolkata Indian Railways has not been able to raise standards to make it world class. Passenger fares must be raised to make operations sustainable once again.
