As the tempo of the music rises, the children’s enthusiasm picks up as they flay their arms and sway their bodies in a uniform pattern. At Twist N Turns, groups of young children explore dance as a form of creative expression instead of going through rigorous training modules. At its centres in Salt Lake and Ballygunge, the academy offers courses for children of three age groups. The youngest children between the ages of two and a half to four years are enrolled in an innovative dance programme called Creative Movement for Children. Giving free rein to their imagination, children are encouraged to imitate the movements of familiar objects like trees, planets or animals. Thought- oriented and not re- strained by instructions, these movements help children to improve their fitness levels, self- esteem, team spirit and communication skills. Children between the ages of four and eight are taught some basic directional movements and then go on to learn a few techniques of jazz and hip- hop.
With contemporary international tracks playing in the background, the ambience is electric as the nimble- footed youngsters show off their moves. Lessons are imparted in three levels: beginners, improvers and advanced. The training becomes tougher for preteens as they are taught jazz and hip- hop in a more integrated fashion.
HIGHLIGHTS CHILDREN can take their own time to complete one level— the focus is on enjoying the classes
