Chennai Crocodile Bank

India Today - - SIMPLY CHENNAI -

The ideal spot to spend a laid- back Sunday afternoon, the Crocodile Bank is the first crocodile breeding centre in Asia and is also one of the largest reptile zoos in the world. The bank was set up in 1976 by famed herpetologist Romulus Whitaker with an aim to conserve three endangered species of crocodiles — the mugger crocodile, the saltwater crocodile and the gharial.

One of the world’s largest collections of crocodiles and alligators are bred and protected in their natural habitat here and an in- house snake farm is used to produce anti- venom as well. The Crocodile Bank is spread over eight and a half acres of land and is home to over 2500 reptiles. Today the centre which lies on the East Coast Road is a highly popular tourist destination and sees more than half a million visitors per year. The Crocodile Bank is closed on Mondays and open from 8.30 am to 5.30 pm through the rest of the week. At No. 4, Mamallapuram Tel 27472447
