Ballygunge Place has yet another dine den. And this one isn’t Bengali. Owned by Bengali rock band Lakkhichhara keyboardist Debaditya Chaudhury, this is the third restaurant of the chain ( and sixth outlet). This one’s the biggest so far with seating capacity for around 40 people. Chowman’s USP or motto has been “five star food at one star prices”, we wouldn’t know about the five star tag but it’s definitely not a place where you’d come away feeling cheated. With a giant Buddha mural on the wall, and red brocade- like wallpaper, the interiors look appealingly “Chinese”.
The food too is a mix of both sure fire hits like Roast Chilli Pork and Chilli Chicken to not so common options like Schezwan Orange Roasted Pork. That’s another plus about this restaurant. Not many restaurants come take away options in the city offer pork and in such variety of preparations. Nor do they offer packed chopsticks with every delivery order. It’s these cute little touches that make Chowman a must visit. Even if it means waiting in line to dine. Among the starters don’t miss the
crispy Prawn Pepper Salt and Kung Pao Chicken. Debaditya recommends the Thai- style Mei Fun for its lemon grass flavour. If you like your black bean sauce a little on the chunky side where you can taste the salty pungency of fermented black beans the Chicken in Black Bean Sauce they serve is a must try. Dessert options include more of the tried and tested. Take your pick from Date Pancake or Darsaan with vanilla ice cream Average meal for two Rs 650 At 99, Ballygunge Place Tel 40075123
