By dol­ing out gifts to the poor and the gen­eral pub­lic in var­i­ous forms, Ra­jasthan Chief Min­is­ter Ashok Gehlot is try­ing to stall the grow­ing in­flu­ence of Va­sund­hara Raje in the run- up to the forth­com­ing Assem­bly elec­tions. Th­ese pop­ulist moves will yield lit­tle re­sult as peo­ple are not gen­er­ally happy with his style of func­tion­ing and the anti- in­cum­bency fac­tor might se­verely af­fect his poll prospects. How­ever, with ba­sic ameni­ties— like health­care, ed­u­ca­tion, power and wa­ter— in a sham­bles, it is doubt­ful that th­ese mea­sures at the last mo­ment will be able to turn the tide in his favour.
