Method to se­quence DNA starts. Makes it pos­si­ble to iden­tify and tar­get mu­tated genes and DNA ab­nor­mal­i­ties that cause can­cer.

1976

Michael Bishop and Harold Var­mus dis­cover onco­genes, which can trans­form a nor­mal cell into a ma­lig­nant one.

1980s

Iden­ti­fi­ca­tion of tu­mour sup­pres­sor gene. It pro­tects a cell from can­cer but when it does not work prop­erly, cells can grow out of con­trol.

1991

Sci­en­tist Steven Rosen­berg makes first suc­cess­ful at­tempt to treat can­cer pa­tients by insert­ing po­tent anti- tu­mour genes into their blood.

2000- 01

Neu­ro­sci­en­tist Craig Venter se­quences first full hu­man genome.

2010- 2013

Ge­netic test­ing be­comes an im­por­tant ther­a­peu­tic tool. Over 2,500 tests are avail­able, pre­vent­ing can­cer is one such tool.
