can­cer by the skin of her teeth. De­spite sev­eral false alarms and some surg­eries, she has never ac­tu­ally had can­cer. Born to a fam­ily where 16 peo­ple died of can­cer, she has in­her­ited the faulty fam­ily gene. But she was proac­tive about get­ting her­self screened reg­u­larly since 1989, and liv­ing a healthy life­style.

tests ar­rived on the scene. They re­vealed ab­nor­mal mu­ta­tions of the BRCA gene, re­spon­si­ble for ovar­ian and breast can­cers, but for­tu­nately,

no can­cer.
