Reinvented nostalgia

India Today - - SIMPLY KOLKATA - by Malini Banerjee

Jhaal Farezi is Ambuja Realty’s newest kid on the restaurant block right in the heart of Kolkata. The refurbished old bungalow now houses a café, a fine dining restaurant with the two private dining areas, a banquet and a small place for gigs called the Music Room. The ten- seater private dining area attached to the fine dining section upstairs boasts of a chandelier made with green wine bottles, and is corporate chef Sumanta Chakrabrti’s baby. On the menu look out for popular picks from Kolkata as well as a few Anglo Indian classics. The classic Kolkata Phuchka is reinvented with the fried semolina puffs served on shot glasses, each with a different flavoured water. However, the dish that gives the restaurant its name was rather unimpressive the day we visited though. However, we liked the Fish and Chips, Bangers and Mash but with the Kolkata twist of Entally spiced sausages and Bengali style potato mash.
