The beauty of cut­ting chai is that it is a great lev­eller. It makes you feel that there’s no one rich or poor and that we are all equal in so­ci­ety. It rep­re­sents the spirit of Mum­bai. I loved hav­ing a cup or two es­pe­cially dur­ing the rains. I stud­ied in Jai Hind Col­lege in Church­gate. The two streets, A and B roads, both have amaz­ing cut­ting chai which is brewed with adrak ( ginger). I used to go sit there and have my daily dose of tea. In the Jai Hind can­teen, there is a tea named af­ter me. Prakash, one of the wait­ers there, served me tea that had a cer­tain amount of milk, wa­ter and which was brewed for a pre­cise time. If you go to the Jai Hind can­teen to­day, you can still get the spe­cial tea.
