The beauty of cutting chai is that it is a great leveller. It makes you feel that there’s no one rich or poor and that we are all equal in society. It represents the spirit of Mumbai. I loved having a cup or two especially during the rains. I studied in Jai Hind College in Churchgate. The two streets, A and B roads, both have amazing cutting chai which is brewed with adrak ( ginger). I used to go sit there and have my daily dose of tea. In the Jai Hind canteen, there is a tea named after me. Prakash, one of the waiters there, served me tea that had a certain amount of milk, water and which was brewed for a precise time. If you go to the Jai Hind canteen today, you can still get the special tea.
