High on Budget
One of my earliest memories of growing up in Delhi was a monthly trip to Connaught Place and Janpath with my grandmother. What I remember most is the hustle and bustle on the street and the great mix of people: The well- heeled and the not- so- privileged, Indians and foreigners. It truly was the melting pot of all who loved street shopping, great bargains and a sense of accomplishment. Over the years I’ve continued to visit the area for inspiration. It still offers the best overview to all that’s new in textiles and handicrafts in India. Unique and quirky, you name it and it’s available: From carved wooden boxes, colourful jutis, tiedye scarves and Pashmina shawls to Rajasthani mirrorwork ghagras, chikankari kurtis from Lucknow, brass ornaments, decorative wall hangings, oils and perfume in well- used bottles. It’s a haven for budget travellers and shoppers.
