It is impossible not to think that the revelations were not politically timed and had nothing to do with General V. K. Singh’s appearance at the ex- servicemen’s rally in Rewari. If an inquiry report was submitted to the Government in March, it should have immediately taken action on it. In warfare, we have a principle that a surrounded enemy must be left a single escape route, else he will fight to the finish. The Government pushed General V. K. Singh to the wall. He had no choice but to fight. I would have advised General Singh to call for a thorough probe into the allegations. The most disturbing aspect about the report is the finding that the Army tried to destabilise a democratically elected government in Jammu and Kashmir. There is a need for a thorough probe into the report. At stake is the honour of the Indian Army.
