BHARTI SINGH Bharti Singh, famous as Lalli, is definitely the pioneer female standup comedian. Singh’s gigs at The Great Indian Laughter Challenge ( Season 4) in 2008 as Lalli ( a fat schoolgirl) and Golu ( a Sardar boy) have made her a household name. But not many know that as a gold medalist in pistol shooting and archery at the national level, Bharti never dreamt of an acting and comedy career. Eventually, it was Punjab Naatshala that became a solid platform for her entry into the industry. “I started doing theatre in Naatshala while in college. There, veterans like Abu Sharma and Sudesh Lehri prompted me to take part in the Laughter Challenge and I auditioned. When I got the call telling me I was selected, I thought it was a prank until the representative from the production house spoke to my family,” the comedian recalls. Her scripts and punches revolve around social and political realities familiar to the audience. Just how seriously she takes comedy is obvious by the Kalpana Chawla Award for Excellence she won for her contribution towards the world of comedy. HASDI KHELDI KAPIL SHARMA Kapil Sharma needs no introduction. Winner of acclaimed comedy shows like The Great Indian Laughter Challenge and Comedy Circus, the much popular 30- yearold from Amritsar believes that comedy flows in Punjabi blood. But Sharma did not have it easy in the business at the beginning and he managed to get a foot in the door
