SIMPLY GUJARATI recommends the best restaurants across the region

MasterChef-2 winner Shipra Khanna has launched her maiden restaurant venture in Ahmedabad—H.O.T (House of Taste). Warm hues, soft lighting and an unexpected quirkiness encourage guests to settle in, get comfortable and have a great time. It was Gujarat’s love for food that brought Khanna, originally from Shimla, to the state to open her first restaurant. The restaurant offers an infinite bouquet of cuisines like Punjabi, Mexican, Italian, French and Continental. The owner’s training under French Chef Alain Passard reflects in the obvious French influence in her menu. She recommends trying their Tinda soup with simple vegetable stock and apple gourd dumpling or Snow White tomato soup with a hint of tomato in the sour cream soup. We recommend their Mayan-e-Kebab, which is cutlets made from pulses and served with tangy pineapple chutney. For the main course, try their sizzling gobhi that goes well with their Dal Peshawari with a secret spice. Team these up with a variety of breads like walnut and Fig naan, zafrani paratha and Amritsari kulcha.

Pocket friendly NATRANI CAFÉ

Natarani Café, a restarant in the premises of the Darpana Performing Arts Academy, is a place where art meets affordable food. They serve the best South Indian food at very low prices. The city’s factory wastes have been put to maximum use in the space that’s run by Mallika Sarabhai, renowned danseuse and founder of the cafe. In 1999, an installation artist Victoria Spence and Sarabhai together launched Natrani Cafe. This space is a café in the Parisians sense of the word—a place to talk, to listen to great music, to linger, to hang out. The café has excelled in dosas and utthappas and very good wraps and pastas instead. The café has a bulletin board with the menu written over it that changes on regular basis. The menu offers a lot of options with Gujarati, South Indian, Tibetan and Italian cuisines. Try their humble serving of dal rice or go for Parippu Vada, Mutta Roast or Kerala style egg curry and kuttu paratha.
