Into the City
A checklist on what to do, what to eat and what to shop for.
In a city besieged by Chinese restaurants, it’s a pleasure to find a restaurant that dares to be different. Rubi’s Grill is a tiny American diner but serves hearty fare. Designed like a 60’s American eatery, its walls are papered with posters of westerns and Robert De Niro and Al Pacino movies. The restaurant also has an outdoor seating area. Unlike a true diner though, this one aims to stay healthy. “Our burgers and most of the food is grilled rather than fried,” says owner Manish Das, who dreamed up the idea while working in New York. Das swears by his pork spare ribs, beef steak, pork chops and gourmet beef burger. Meat Lover burger, with a filling of ham sausage and bacon, is quite a hit wih hard core non vegetarians. The restaurant also serves a selection of basic pastas. Desserts do leave a lot to be desired though. You won’t find typical diner desserts like Phildelphia Cheesecake here. All that steak leaves one thirsty for a pint but Rubi’s Grill doesn’t serve liquor either. At 7/2B, Dover Lane Tel 40056001
