The Elec­tion Com­mis­sion has an­nounced dates for the 2014 Gen­eral Elec­tions. There are many firsts.

9 phases

be­tween April 7 to May 12 make this the long­est Lok Sabha elec­tion ever. The 2009 polls had five phases.

100 mil­lion

new vot­ers, nearly as many as the com­bined pop­u­la­tion of the United King­dom and Canada.

23 mil­lion

vot­ers aged 18 to 19, a mas­sive in­crease of about 300 per cent over 2009.

28,314

trans­gen­der vot­ers. For the first time ever, trans­gen­der people have been in­cluded in elec­toral rolls as ‘oth­ers’.
