Since 2011, the Supreme Court has made clear its low opin­ion of Jallikattu, the sup­pos­edly mil­len­niaold Tamil sport of bull­tam­ing. In May 2014, the court specif­i­cally said that bulls “can­not be al­lowed as per­form­ing an­i­mals” for such events. Mat­ters came to a head this month as tens of thou­sands protesters swarmed the streets of Chen­nai to claim jallikattu as in­trin­sic to Tamil iden­tity. The court ban was tem­po­rar­ily over­turned. Just a day later, two men were gored to death and sev­eral dozen in­jured as bulls ram­paged through dusty vil­lage streets
