In Porom­boke (which trans­lates to ‘land ex­empt from as­sess­ment, be­cause it is ei­ther un­cul­tivable or com­mu­nal land), T.M. Kr­ishna sings: “It is not for you, nor for me, it is for the com­mu­nity.” The song Chen­nai Porom­boke Paadal, orig­i­nally by Kaber Va­suki, was recorded as part of a cam­paign to spot­light the in­dus­trial en­croach­ment of Chen­nai’s En­nore Creek. The 40-year-old Magsaysay awardee has been hailed both for his so­cial work as well as his bid to democra­tise Car­natic mu­sic, by choos­ing to per­form in the city’ slums, rather than at more tra­di­tional venues
