A Primer on Insulin

India Today - - LEISURE -

What is insulin? How does it work?

Insulin is a hormone secreted by the beta cells of the pancreas. It is an important regulator of carbohydrate metabolism. It acts like a key, by ‘opening’ the cells of the body to take up glucose

What is insulin resistance?

When the body’s cells respond poorly to the action of insulin, the condition is known as insulin resistance. It can develop because of factors such as obesity or genetic and endocrine disorders

What are the symptoms?

Unfortunately, conditions such as insulin resistance and prediabetes do not have any symptoms. For example, prediabetes can only be diagnosed during a laboratory test of blood glucose levels
