TOXIC BEACH

India Today - - UPFRONT - JAISON G.

The sands on the Ennore shoreline, stained black by oil, offer compelling visual evidence of the aftermath of the collision, on January 28, of two ships in the waters near Chennai. It has been at once extraordinary and horrifying to see the community spirit that has enthused volunteers to descend onto the beach to participate in the cleanup with little more than buckets and their bare hands. The government has been eager to declare the cleanup more or less complete, but the extent of the marine and general ecological damage is yet to be known or even properly acknowledged.
