The Great Gama aka Ghu­lam Muham­mad Butt aka Rus­tame­Za­mana be­came ‘World Cham­pion’ in 1910 af­ter de­feat­ing Pol­ish strong­man Stanis­laus Zbyszko (by de­fault—Zyb­szko failed to turn up). One of the first sub­con­ti­nen­tal celebri­ties, Gama moved to Pak­istan af­ter the Par­ti­tion and re­tired in 1952. G.D. Birla is said to have pro­vided him a pen­sion. No one’s writ­ten a book on him yet, though there have been ru­mours of a biopic star­ring John Abraham. And many tourists re­turn from Ladakh scratch­ing their heads over those cau­tion­ary road signs about be­ing a Gama in the land of the Lama. Now you know.
