Ex­porters of buf­falo meat in UP are pre­dict­ing losses of Rs 2,000 crore dur­ing the tra­di­tion­ally lu­cra­tive month-long Ramzan pe­riod, be­gin­ning May 26 this year. The UP govern­ment’s cam­paign to shut down il­le­gal slaugh­ter­houses and the unchecked vi­o­lence of cow vig­i­lantes have caused un­cer­tainty in a boom­ing in­dus­try. Buf­falo slaugh­ter, un­like cow slaugh­ter in most In­dian states, is le­gal and the ex­port of buf­falo meat, classified as beef by the US, has cat­a­pulted In­dia along­side Brazil as the world’s pri­mary source for beef. The de­mand for buf­falo, for its fatty milk and its meat, is re­flected in the grow­ing num­bers of buf­faloes in In­dia. By con­trast, the revered desi cow is strug­gling to sur­vive, with num­bers fall­ing since 1992, even tak­ing into ac­count im­ported and cross­bred cat­tle
