A CBI court in Lucknow rejected an application by 12 BJP members to dismiss charges of conspiracy against them over the demolition of the Babri Masjid in Ayodhya in 1992. Among those charged were former deputy prime minister L.K. Advani, Union minister Uma Bharti and senior leader Murli Manohar Joshi. However, bail was granted. The court said enough evidence was available to charge all 12 with criminal conspiracy. Court proceedings are expected to be completed in two years, in time for the 2019 general election. The BJP is supporting its leaders, with many members expressing confidence that all will be acquitted. Conspiracy charges were dropped by the Allahabad High Court in 2001 but revived in April this year by the Supreme Court.
