DAY OF THE DEAD

India Today - - UPFRONT - RAJ K RAJ/ GETTY IMAGES

Tibetan protesters gathered outside the office of the United Nations in Delhi on May 29 to demand that a special session of the UN be held, according to the organisers, to discuss Chinese rule of Tibet. Organisers said the UN should “hold China responsible for their policies and take urgent action for Tibet”. They allege that as many as 150 people have self-immolated protesting Chinese policies. The protesters lay down next to mock coffins intended to represent the dead. Tibetan flags were draped over the coffins and the protesters lay under white shrouds. Self-immolations have increased dramatically since 2008 and protesters describe them as indicative of the desperation of Tibetans living under occupation.
