Sonny Liew’s The Art of Char­lie Chan Hock Chye presents an in­ci­sive ac­count of Sin­ga­pore’s so­cial and po­lit­i­cal trans­for­ma­tion through a car­toon­ist’s life. How­ever, its metic­u­lously ren­dered arte­facts—the child­hood draw­ings, the early strips, the pe­riod magazine cov­ers—bely the fact that the tit­u­lar char­ac­ter is en­tirely fic­ti­tious.
