MEENA NANDAL, 56
Free of cancer, and with no side effects, the schoolteacher says, “I teach, I sing, I love life.”
Nandal was on a trip to Japan with her husband in 2010 when she was diagnosed with stage 3 ovarian cancer. Despite rounds of treatments, the cancer returned, chemotherapy-resistant, after 18 months. She tested positive for a mutation in the BRCA2 gene at the Strand Centre for Genomics and Personalised Medicine, Bengaluru. Diligent genetic analyses indicated her eligibility for a new kind of therapy (PARP inhibitor), the pill for which had just been approved by the USFDA.
