Fake news spread chiefly via What­sApp has been blamed for ri­ot­ing, even mur­der in In­dia. The main­stream me­dia, of course, has played a not in­signif­i­cant role in the de­cline of care­fully sourced, factchecked re­port­ing. And when politi­cians are rou­tinely caught quot­ing fake news as truth, you won­der if there ought to be a word for some­one who buys this stuff hook, line and sinker. Shashi Tha­roor is the lat­est to de­light in a coinage that ap­pears to date only to late May—We­baqoof: one who be­lieves ev­ery word he reads on the net or so­cial me­dia.
