Rise of the Webaqoof
Fake news spread chiefly via WhatsApp has been blamed for rioting, even murder in India. The mainstream media, of course, has played a not insignificant role in the decline of carefully sourced, factchecked reporting. And when politicians are routinely caught quoting fake news as truth, you wonder if there ought to be a word for someone who buys this stuff hook, line and sinker. Shashi Tharoor is the latest to delight in a coinage that appears to date only to late May—Webaqoof: one who believes every word he reads on the net or social media.
