CHIN UP, GIRLS!
The World Cup was there for the taking for the women in blue, at least as long as Punam Raut was at the crease. A batting collapse meant India finished nine runs short. Swing bowler Anya Shrubsole took six wickets, five in just 19 balls, as she skittled out the Indian lower order. Still, it was a thrilling final and India had an outstanding tournament, with skipper Mithali Raj breaking records and rivalling her male counterparts for attention. The feats of Jhulan Goswami, Harmanpreet Kaur’s 171 not out, off 115 balls in the semifinal against Australia, and Raut’s excellent innings in the final will be justly celebrated. As now, surely, will be the women’s game.
