NI­TISH KU­MAR stirred a hor­net’s nest with his sug­ges­tion that the pri­vate sec­tor too should have reser­va­tion quo­tas for jobs. The Bi­har gov­ern­ment said laws on reser­va­tions would ap­ply even to ser­vices out­sourced by the gov­ern­ment, invit­ing crit­i­cism not just from his op­po­nents but also his al­lies in the BJP. Ku­mar clar­i­fied that the rule ap­plied in cases where the gov­ern­ment was pay­ing wages, rather than gov­ern­ment con­tracts bid for and won by pri­vate con­trac­tors. But he stressed his sup­port for im­prov­ing the ac­cess of back­ward castes to pri­vate sec­tor jobs.
