The In­dian gen­eral elec­tion is the largest peace-time event-man­age­ment ex­er­cise on earth. The lo­gis­ti­cal chal­lenge of hold­ing near-si­mul­ta­ne­ous elec­tions to 543 Lok Sabha seats—in­volv­ing 930,000 polling sta­tions and a stag­ger­ing 900 mil­lion vot­ers—is hard to over­state. In­dia also has the dis­tinc­tion of hav­ing the high­est num­ber of el­i­gi­ble vot­ers any­where in the world, and has earned for it­self the rep­u­ta­tion of con­duct­ing among the most cred­i­ble elec­tions. Si­mul­ta­ne­ous elec­tions do hold the prom­ise of some re­source op­ti­mi­sa­tion but they are fraught in other ways. Here’s a mea­sure of the chal­lenge for 2019:
