Srishti Assisted Fertility & Advanced Laparoscopy Center

IVF India - - Puducherry, U.t. -

When did you start Srishti, Assisted Fertility & Advanced Laparoscopy Center? Srishti Assisted Fertility & Advanced Laparoscopy Center was started on March 28th 2012.

How did you choose this particular branch of medicine? It was all by default. I got a M.D in Obstetrics and Gynecology, because a vacancy cropped up. I took up Reproductive Medicine after that because I realized a growing demand for the branch in Pondicherry

Why Puducherry? I did my MBBS and MD in Puducherry. So, Puducherry is a second home to me. Puducherry, currently is a big medical hub with 8 medical colleges and many private hospitals and nursing homes. During my MD, I realized that there were a lot of infertile couples in this region, and the nearest treatment destination was Chennai. Treatment at all major centers is expensive in Chennai. With a huge segment of the population in the lower income group, in Puducherry and its neighbouring districts, I thought that this center would cater to the needs of all such people, as the expenditure incurred to the patient is about half of that of Chennai. Also, the thought of being the first in this field in Pondicherry also was appealing. Additionally, the attractive option of Fertility tourism was in my mind. Pondicherry, being a must see city, in the international and national tourism arena, with its exotic appeal, and relaxed lifestyle, would be the tailor made option to most stressed out couples seeking fertility treatment. They could actually relax their way through this stressful treatment, in a ‘vacation ‘ spot like Pondicherry.

What are the problems that you faced during start up and what is the situation today? As with any start up, there was a problems galore in store. First, the finances. 11 banks refused to grant loan citing the fact that this venture was not feasible in a place like Pondicherry. Finally, after a long tedious process of the loan sanction, being the first center, there were teething problems in trying to procure media and glass ware required for IVF. Finally, when the first baby was born, it was my dream come true. We started off in a small 500 sqft. laboratory, and now, we have 5500 sqft. dedicated to IVF, treating patients all around the world. Today, every continent (except Antartica !) has a child that has been conceived and nurtured in the incubators at Srishti…

What was your vision for starting Srishti, Assisted Fertility & Advanced Laparoscopy Center ? The vision was to be the first center in the Union territory, to provide affordable fertility treatment to the masses.

How far do you think you have succeeded in your endeavour? In these 3 years, we have moved on: from a state of doubt and disbelief to a state of trust and belief;, from a state being brushed off to a state of respect and reverence, in the medical fraternity. Nothing is more humbling than this experience… Nothing defines our endeavours better…

What motivates you in this field? Babies…babies…and more babies…!!! They are the best motivation.

Is IVF difficult to go through from a patient’s perspective? IVF treatment is a very difficult treatment to undergo. Infact, there are a lot of similarities in the expectations from this treatment and the treatment of Cancer. In both forms of therapy, there are a lot of injections, lot of money involved…without any guarantees. That is the most difficult part from a patient’s perspective…

What is your idea of good patient care? Being honest to the patient, and giving them a patient hearing. That does all the magic…

What is the kind of care a patient can expect Srishti ? A wholesome personalized care and attention...

What are your memories of the first IVF Baby you helped conceive? The baby was a beautiful girl, who is 2 years old now. I couldn’t believe

that I had handled her as an embryo…

Medical research has taken great strides in the last three decades and there has been a tremendous and remarkable change in the technology that is used. Should patients be reassured by these developments?

Definitely...

What are the most important changes in technology in the last few years? Better media, better drugs, IMSI and IVM. Do you believe the success rate would improve in view of such changes? It is difficult to say at this juncture, as most of the therapies are yet to be validated….

What are the biggest hurdles of making ART available for the masses? Cost of treatment, and a relatively high failure rate as compared to other procedures, or surgeries.

Do you think the government should help infertile couples? Yes…..I do think so. At present, it is surprising that sub-fertility / infertility is not even recognized as a medical condition requiring treatment.

After helping so many distressed couples, how do you unwind to take on another challenging day? By being with my family… and realizing how fortunate I am that these little joys in life came easy to me. I wish, that with my work, I can give the same joys to a million more not so lucky couples…

COUNSELLING OFFERED

The experience of dealing with infertility and IVF treatment is a difficult one. Infertility and its treatment can be very stressful emotionally, physically and financially. At Srishti, we encourage partners to be supportive of each other and participate in the treatment process together.

In addition to consultations with our specialists we also provide the facility to use the support of our counselors. During a counseling session you and your partner talk with a trained professional about the emotions that you are ex- periencing as you struggle through infertility. Our counselor will help you understand these feelings and aid you in finding healthy ways to deal with them. They also assist you in making decisions regarding fertility treatments and other options. Fertility counseling can be very helpful to anyone facing fertility issues.
