A REL­A­TIVELY un­known star­let of Malay­alam cin­ema has sud­denly emerged as the hottest movie star on the in­ter­net, thanks to a wink. Priya Prakash Var­rier, an 18-year-old bud­ding ac­tress from Thris­sur, has be­come the toast of cy­ber space over the past 24 hours or so, af­ter a wink she cast in a song of an Malay­alam up­com­ing film went vi­ral.

Most of Mon­day evening and all through Tues­day, a 10-sec­ond clip from the song fea­tur­ing her wink and smile has gone vi­ral. So­cial me­dia frenzy broke out with tweets, retweets and hi­lar­i­ous memes be­ing cir­cu­lated. A Mr Bean ver­sion of the song be­came pop­u­lar in no time.

Fan pages were be­ing cre­ated for Priya in no time, even as her In­sta­gram fol­low­ing swelled to over 1.2 mil­lion in less than a day.

“Thank you so much for your love and sup­port,” she tweeted.

Need­less to say, the par­tic­u­lar song, Manikya Malaraya Poovi, from the film Oru Adaar Love has be­come an in­ter­net rage. Even those who don’t fol­low Malay­alam lan­guage are check­ing out the song out of cu­rios­ity.

Many in­dus­try watch­ers feel this is the lat­est in on­line gim­mickry to pro­mote a film. The pop­u­lar­ity of the song couldn’t be bet­ter timed. In the sea­son of Valen­tine’s Day, this song seems to have be­come in­ter­net’s love song of the year. The song has gar­nered over four mil­lion views on YouTube so far.

Oru Adaar Love is a rom-com di­rected by GenNow film­maker Omar Lulu, and stars Noorin Shereef and Siyadh Sha­ja­han. The song Manikya Malaraya Poovi has been com­posed by Shaan Rah­man and sung by Vi­neeth Sreeni­vasan. The film is sched­uled to re­lease in the first week of March.
