AFTER Allahabad and Faizabad, similar demands to rename Ahmedabad as Karnavati and Agra as Agravan have emerged from within the saffron family. In Gujarat, chief minister Vijay Rupani has said that his government is looking at the possibility of rechristening Ahmedabad. “We are contemplating changing the name of Ahmedabad to Karnavati. Concrete steps will be taken after looking at it from legal and all other angles,” he said.

While the demand to rename Ahmedabad is old, the petition to rename the city of Taj is new. After Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath recently announced that Allahabad will soon be called “Prayagraj” and Faizabad district will be referred to as “Ayodhya”, BJP legislator Jagan Prasad Garg wants the CM to rename Agra as “Agravan”. “This is an old matter. Many years ago, Agra was Agravan. But after the Mughal rule and other regimes, the name kept changing. (The name) Agra has no meaning nor does it generate any feeling. Rather ‘Agravan’
