Jawa­har­lal Nehru Port Con­tainer Ter­mi­nal (JNPCT) gains from its strate­gic lo­ca­tion at JN Port, Nhava Sheva. JNPCT over the years has taken se­ries of mea­sures for im­prov­ing pro­duc­tiv­ity pa­ram­e­ters lead­ing to record achieve­ments. No­tably, JNPCT was the only ter­mi­nal at JN Port to reg­is­ter pos­i­tive growth in FY2016-17, even though it is strug­gling with ca­pac­ity crunch. Its proac­tive strate­gies to ease con­ges­tion, smooth de­liv­ery of con­tain­ers and re­vamp­ing in­fra­struc­ture to sup­port trade amidst ad­verse con­di­tions along with per­for­mance and op­er­a­tional growth in­flu­enced the jury to rec­og­nize JNPCT as “Con­tainer Ter­mi­nal of the Year” for the above 0.6 mil­lion teus cat­e­gory and be­stowed with The Gate­way Awards 2017.

JNPCT is the lone ter­mi­nal which is owned and op­er­ated by the JN Port Trust. The ter­mi­nal has also taken a se­ries of ini­tia­tives such as the com­mence­ment of in­ter-ter­mi­nal move­ments, which fa­cil­i­tated lat­eral move­ments of con­tainer trucks to de­con­gest the ter­mi­nal. In­ter-ter­mi­nal move­ment of trail­ers avoided a tran­sit of 7.5 km

on the Port roads. It is es­ti­mated that there is an 8 per cent re­duc­tion in move­ment on Port roads and a gain of `125 crore to the trade due to sav­ings in fuel in one year alone. The ter­mi­nal’s av­er­age berth pro­duc­tiv­ity has in­creased by 4.74 per cent from 64.98 moves per hour in FY2015- 16 to 68.06 moves per hour in FY2016-17. The ter­mi­nal has han­dled 1,533,975 teu in FY2016-17 sur­pass­ing pre­vi­ous year’s vol­ume of 1,401,290 teu and reg­is­tered 7.33 per cent Y-O-Y growth in terms of teus and 1.78 per cent in terms of ton­nage. JNPCT han­dled 401,305 teus in the 1st quar­ter of FY2017-18, as com­pared to 399,306 teus dur­ing the cor­re­spond­ing quar­ter of pre­vi­ous year reg­is­ter­ing a growth of 0.5 per cent.
