WeaverStory.com is among the few e-tailers who have chosen to work with only handloom craftsmen and promote different weaving clusters in India. The founding team, comprising Nishant Malhotra and Ritu Lekhi, has serviced over 2000 customers, spreading joy in over 20 countries through its online sales portal. Recently, it also opened its flagship store in heart of South Delhi, to cater to customers not willing to buy online. We bring a tête-à-tête with the spirited entrepreneur and founder of WeaverStory. com, Nishant Malhotra.

What is WeaverStory.com? When was the start-up conceptualised?

WeaverStory.com is an attempt to bring the best handcrafted products to end-users, directly from the chosen craftsmen of India. WeaverStory.com began its journey on National Handloom Day, 8th August 2015, to promote and preserve the dying art of Indian handlooms. We wish to reach out to all saree lovers by bringing economies of scale, while ensuring they get the best at all times. Therefore, beside the price advantage, we offer a strong distribution network, a convenient return policy and assisted and customised offerings.

Tell us about the collection at WeaverStory.com? What kind of designs do you promote and why?

WeaverStory.com has been focusing predominantly on Banarasi weaves and reviving designs from museums and traditional forms from the annals of weaving. We have also been developing new and old motifs and patterns to cater to the tastes of contemporary audiences, so as to encourage them to wear saris. As for designs, we have almost all forms in Banarasi weaves, be it Jaals, Chaas ki Muthari, or Neelambari, to name a few. We have an exclusive range of Shikargahs also, in different weaving styles like real silver zari, Tanchois, Kimkhabs, besides traditional real zari work.

We know that Banarasi is among the most precious pieces in a bride’s trousseau; hence we make effort to customise the design, colour and zari, so that it stands out.

How is WeaverStory.com helping struggling craftsman?

WeaverStory.com is directly working with weavers and their cooperatives in various states, thereby shortening the sales cycle and helping weavers get more and instant value for their produce. We also have a softer side to our approach: We work with ladies, helping them with education and acquisition of skills through workshops on saree finishing, tassel-making, etc, ensuring that they become financially stronger and independent.
